Looking for a Slido alternative? Here's what to check first
A decision tree for choosing the right live-audience Q&A tool: Slido, Mentimeter, TA pilot, or rolling your own. Start with the scale question.
Looking for a Slido alternative? Start with the scale question
Slido is the default for live audience Q&A and polls. It's fine. If you're looking to switch, here's the decision tree we recommend.
Question 1: How big is your audience?
- 10–100 attendees per session — Most tools work. Pick based on
feature fit, not scale.
- 100–2,000 attendees — Still most tools work. Test with realistic
load a day before the talk.
- 2,000+ attendees — Stick with the enterprise-grade tools (Slido,
PollEverywhere). The edge cases at scale are what you pay for.
Question 2: Where does your audience live?
- In a Zoom/Meet window — Any tool works. The audience already
has a second-screen expectation.
- In a physical room with phones — You need a QR-code first-class
experience. Slido is fine. TA pilot is fine. Mentimeter's QR is less prominent.
- Mixed (hybrid) — QR + link matters. Every tool we've tried does
this acceptably.
Question 3: What's your primary interaction?
- Just Q&A — Slido, TA pilot, or the native Q&A in Meet/Zoom. Any
of them.
- Polls dominate — Mentimeter is still best-in-class for polished
poll visualizations.
- Voice-triggered polls + Q&A + timers in one sidebar — This is
where TA pilot differentiates. It's voice-first where others are click-first.
Question 4: Who runs the session?
- One presenter — Any tool works.
- Team of 2–3 moderators — Check the team/co-host features
explicitly. TA pilot lets any co-host join with the same password. Slido makes this a per-seat pricing tier.
- Professional production team — Slido Enterprise is built for this.
Question 5: Budget?
- $0 — TA pilot is free for sessions up to 250 attendees (we
subsidize with our own API credits). Slido has a free tier capped at 100 live participants.
- $10–100/month — Mentimeter's mid-tier is strong. Slido Pro is
fine.
- Enterprise — Slido owned by Cisco means integration with Webex
and enterprise SSO; nobody else matches that.
Quick-take recommendation
- You're a teacher or indie presenter → TA pilot. Free, voice-first,
Chrome sidebar.
- You're running a polished corporate webinar → Slido Pro.
- You do a ton of polls with fancy visuals → Mentimeter.
- You're at a 5,000-person keynote → Slido Enterprise or custom.
There's no single right answer. Match the tool to the shape of your talks.
